Teaching Making Dances and Site-Specific Choreography

Making Dances Do you want to choreograph but have difficulty getting started? Have you started countless dances but have trouble staying connected to them? In daily assignments often beginning with highly structured improvisations that approach the creative process from multiple angles, this class will explore how to begin, how to continue, how the mind helps, how the mind hinders, how to feel/know the " yes " when body, mind, and heart are alive and in agreement, how to work when inspiration doesn't come. Through a heightened awareness and sensitivity to space, time and energy, each participant will hone their unique artistic voice in a supportive environment that nurtures curiosity, experimentation, and total commitment to each moment. Ideas, sensation, deep feeling, memory, music, words, and environments of all kinds will be explored in solo, duet, and group forms.

Site-Specific Choreography Moving out of the classroom, participants explore the delights of partnering with space and place. Each day different environments will be revealed through solo, duet, and group improvisations and short choreographic explorations. What dance can only be done in this place and nowhere else? Listening to the memories, energy, light, and architecture of a specific place, a new approach to creativity is awakened. The three weeks of exploration will culminate in the creation of short site/video works as well as a live showing.
